How partner support helps

From “What do I do?” to “I know how to help.”

Partners often want to help but are not always sure what labor, birth, or postpartum will actually require. Partner support gives them tools, language, confidence, and a better understanding of their role.

The goal is not to replace the partner. The goal is to help partners feel more present, prepared, and connected.

Before birth Learn what to expect, how to prepare, what questions to ask, and how to support the birth plan.
During labor Use comfort tools, encouragement, positioning support, hydration reminders, and calming presence.
After birth Support recovery, feeding, rest, newborn care, household rhythm, and emotional adjustment.

For partners and support people

Support can include spouses, partners, parents, siblings, friends, and chosen family.

Partner support is not limited to one person. If someone will be supporting you during pregnancy, birth, or postpartum, they can benefit from education and guidance.

We help support people understand how to be involved in a way that feels useful, respectful, and connected.

Partner support questions

Before you book

Is partner support a separate appointment?

Partner support is usually built into a new client visit, returning client visit, private childbirth class, group childbirth class, labor and birth support, or postpartum visit. If you are unsure what to book, start with a free consultation.

Can my partner come to appointments?

Yes. Partners and support people are welcome at many appointments and childbirth classes. If you are unsure whether they should attend a specific visit, ask the office before booking.

What will my partner learn?

Partners can learn comfort measures, what to expect during labor, how to communicate with the care team, how to support decision-making, and how to help during postpartum recovery.

Is partner support covered by Partnership/Medi-Cal?

Partner guidance may be part of covered doula visits for eligible Partnership/Medi-Cal clients. Coverage can depend on eligibility, appointment type, timing, and service details.

What if my partner is nervous about birth?

That is very common. Partner support gives them a place to ask questions, understand what may happen, and practice ways to help so they can feel calmer and more prepared.
