Who virtual doula support is for
Virtual doula support is for families who want warm, practical guidance but do not always need, qualify for, or have access to an in-person visit for every step of care.
Virtual support may be a good fit if:
- You are pregnant and want help preparing for birth, appointments, comfort measures, and postpartum planning.
- You recently gave birth and want postpartum guidance without needing to pack up the baby or travel.
- You live in Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville, Fortuna, rural Humboldt County, or an area where travel is difficult.
- Transportation, weather, childcare, work schedules, or recovery make an online doula visit easier.
- Your partner, family member, or support person wants to join from another location.
- You need support between in-person appointments or while waiting for your next scheduled visit.
- You want help understanding whether Partnership/Medi-Cal, private pay, or another option may apply.
In-person or medical care is still needed when:
- You want hands-on comfort measures, in-home postpartum help, or a home visit. Home visits remain in-person.
- You are in active labor and need physical support that cannot be provided by video or phone.
- You have urgent symptoms, medical questions, reduced fetal movement, heavy bleeding, severe pain, or any emergency concern.
- Your clinician, hospital, birth center, health plan, or care situation requires in-person support.

Online doula care
What virtual doula support can include
Virtual visits are non-medical doula sessions focused on education, emotional support, preparation, planning, and practical next steps.
Virtual prenatal support
Talk through pregnancy questions, birth preferences, appointment preparation, comfort measures, partner roles, and what to expect as birth gets closer.
Virtual postpartum support
Receive gentle postpartum check-ins for recovery, feeding questions, newborn routines, emotional support, family adjustment, and resource navigation.
Virtual birth preparation
Prepare for labor, hospital or birth-center logistics, coping tools, partner support, questions to ask your care team, and what to pack or plan.
Virtual labor support where appropriate
When it fits the situation, your doula may provide calm phone or video support during labor, including reminders, encouragement, grounding, and partner guidance.
Partner and family support
Invite a partner, grandparent, or support person to join virtually so everyone understands the plan, comfort options, and postpartum expectations.
Coverage and next-step guidance
We can help you understand what information may be needed for insurance review, what private-pay options are available, and how to schedule your next visit.

We review visit goals and logistics
You can share your due date or postpartum stage, language needs, partner involvement, technology access, and whether you prefer video or phone.
Coverage or private pay is discussed before scheduling
Many families may qualify for covered doula support, but eligibility and plan details apply. Private-pay options are also available.
You meet with your doula virtually
Your visit may include education, emotional support, planning, questions, comfort ideas, partner coaching, postpartum check-ins, or referrals.
You leave with a clear next step
After your visit, we help clarify what comes next: another virtual visit, an in-person visit, a birth support plan, postpartum follow-up, or coverage support.
Insurance and private pay
Coverage guidance for virtual doula visits
Nueva Vida has successfully billed Partnership HealthPlan for qualifying virtual visits. Many families may qualify for doula support coverage, but coverage is not guaranteed and eligibility and plan details apply.
Qualifying virtual prenatal visits, virtual postpartum visits, virtual birth preparation, and virtual labor support where appropriate may be reviewed for coverage.
For Medi-Cal and Partnership HealthPlan families, our office can help confirm next steps before you rely on coverage.
Private-pay options are available for families who are not using insurance, who do not qualify, or who want added support outside covered visits.
Clear boundaries
What virtual support does and does not replace
Virtual doula support can be deeply helpful, but it is not the right tool for every moment.
Not medical care
We do not diagnose, treat, prescribe, monitor fetal health, or make medical decisions. Contact your clinical care team for medical questions.
Not emergency support
For emergency symptoms or urgent concerns, contact your provider, go to labor and delivery, or call emergency services.
Not a home visit
Virtual visits can support planning and check-ins, but hands-on help and home visits remain in-person.
Questions
Virtual doula FAQs
What is a virtual doula?
A virtual doula provides non-medical pregnancy, birth preparation, labor, and postpartum support by video or phone. The focus is emotional support, education, planning, comfort tools, partner guidance, and practical next steps.
Is virtual doula support the same as online doula support?
Yes. Families may use the terms virtual doula, online doula, virtual prenatal support, virtual postpartum support, or virtual birth support. At Nueva Vida, these refer to doula visits delivered by video or phone when appropriate.
Are virtual prenatal visits available?
Yes. Virtual prenatal support can help with birth planning, appointment preparation, comfort measures, partner roles, postpartum planning, and questions that do not require medical care.
Are virtual postpartum visits available?
Yes. Virtual postpartum support can include recovery check-ins, feeding questions, emotional support, newborn routines, family adjustment, and help identifying resources or next steps.
Can birth support be virtual?
Sometimes. Virtual birth support may be appropriate for early labor, partner coaching, grounding, reminders, and encouragement. It does not replace hands-on support or clinical care, and it depends on your situation.
Does Partnership HealthPlan or Medi-Cal cover virtual visits?
Nueva Vida has successfully billed Partnership HealthPlan for qualifying virtual visits. Many families may qualify, but coverage is not guaranteed. Eligibility and plan details apply, and our office can help confirm next steps.
What if insurance does not cover my visit?
Private-pay options are available. Visit the coverage page or book a free consultation so our office can help you understand next steps before scheduling paid support.
Are home visits virtual now?
No. Home visits remain in-person. Virtual support is available for certain prenatal, postpartum, birth preparation, and labor support needs when appropriate.
Can my partner or family member join?
Yes. Virtual support can be helpful when a partner, family member, or support person wants to join from work, home, another city, or another household.
Do you offer Spanish-language support?
Se habla español. Please mention your language preference when you book so we can help plan the right support.
What technology do I need?
A phone, tablet, or computer is usually enough. We will discuss the visit format before your appointment and help choose a practical option.
